What will I practise with C1 advanced worksheets?
C1 Advanced is where English fluency begins to approach that of an educated native speaker in most contexts. Grammar at this level is about precision and effect: knowing not only what is correct, but what sounds natural, formal, or appropriately idiomatic in a given context. C1 worksheets challenge learners to move beyond avoiding mistakes into making deliberate, sophisticated language choices.
Topics at C1 include idiomatic expressions, formal writing conventions, academic vocabulary from the Academic Word List, the precise use of dependent prepositions, and the ability to shift register from informal to academic as required. Each worksheet ends with an extended writing task closely aligned to CAE and IELTS Band 7+ requirements.
After completing a worksheet, visit the C1 advanced games page for additional digital practice. Browse all worksheet categories or the practice hub for further exercises.

💡 Tips for studying at C1 level
- Read quality journalism and essays: At C1, your reading diet matters. The Guardian, The Economist, and the New York Times Opinion section expose you to natural idiomatic and formal English in authentic contexts.
- Study the Academic Word List systematically: The AWL contains 570 word families that make up around 10% of all academic text. Learning them with collocations (conduct research, raise concerns, achieve objectives) builds writing range quickly.
- Practise sentence transformation: CAE Use of English Part 4 (key word transformations) is excellent practice for C1 learners even outside exam contexts. It forces you to know multiple ways of expressing the same meaning.
- Keep a register journal: Whenever you read, note sentences that strike you as particularly formal or idiomatic. Try rewriting them in a different register. This deepens your sensitivity to style.
- Write a timed essay weekly: Set a 40-minute timer and write an IELTS-style or CAE-style essay. Use at least three advanced grammar structures from recent worksheets. Review your essay the next day with fresh eyes.
- Use digital practice alongside worksheets: Visit the C1 games page for interactive exercises that complement the printed material with immediate digital feedback.
