Why practise spelling with worksheets?
English spelling has a reputation for being inconsistent, and with good reason. The language has absorbed words from dozens of other languages over centuries, each bringing their own spelling conventions. The result is a system full of silent letters, irregular patterns, and homophones that trip up even native speakers.
For ESL learners, spelling errors can undermine otherwise excellent writing. A well-spelled email or essay signals professionalism and command of the language. Conversely, persistent spelling mistakes distract from content and can affect exam scores in writing tests like IELTS or Cambridge B2/C1.
The good news is that spelling can be systematically improved. Most common errors fall into recognisable patterns: doubling consonants before suffixes, the ie/ei rule, silent letters from Latin, and confusing homophones. By studying these patterns and practising them through targeted worksheets, learners can dramatically reduce their error rate. Each LexFizz spelling worksheet focuses on one or two key patterns for clear, manageable practice.

💡 Spelling improvement strategies
- Look → Cover → Write → Check: Study the word, cover it, write it from memory, then check. Repeat three times for difficult words. This simple technique is highly effective for building accurate spelling recall.
- Learn word families: If you know how to spell ‘spell’, you can work out ‘spelling’, ‘spelt’, and ‘speller’. Learning root words and common affixes multiplies the value of each word you learn.
- Use mnemonics for tricky words: Create a memorable sentence using the letters of a difficult word (e.g. BECAUSE = Big Elephants Can Always Understand Small Elephants).
- Keep a spelling journal: Every time you misspell a word, add it to a personal notebook. Review it weekly. Tracking your own errors is more targeted than generic word lists.
- Play LexFizz Hangman: The Hangman exercise on LexFizz forces you to think letter-by-letter about the spelling of English words, providing fun and effective spelling practice.
