What is an 'orbit'?
An orbit is the curved path that one object takes around another in space, held in place by gravity. The Earth orbits the Sun, and the Moon orbits the Earth. Objects in orbit are constantly falling towards the body they orbit but moving sideways fast enough to keep missing it.
What is a 'light year' in astronomy?
A light year is the distance that light travels in one year, approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres. It is used to measure vast distances in space. Despite the name, a light year is a unit of distance, not time. The nearest star to our Sun is about 4.24 light years away.
What is a 'nebula'?
A nebula is a giant cloud of gas and dust in space. Nebulae are often the birthplaces of stars, where gravity pulls the gas and dust together until nuclear fusion ignites. Some nebulae are the remnants of dead stars. The word is Latin for 'cloud' or 'mist'.
What is a 'black hole'?
A black hole is a region of space where gravity is so strong that nothing — not even light — can escape. It forms when a massive star collapses at the end of its life. The boundary beyond which nothing can escape is called the event horizon. Supermassive black holes are found at the centres of most large galaxies.
What is an 'exoplanet'?
An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. Thousands have been discovered using the transit method (detecting a slight dimming of a star's light as a planet passes in front) and the radial velocity method. Scientists search for exoplanets in the 'habitable zone' where liquid water might exist.
What is a 'rover' in space exploration?
A rover is a space exploration vehicle designed to move across the surface of a planet or moon. Rovers are typically robotic and controlled from Earth, carrying scientific instruments to study terrain, soil and atmosphere. Famous examples include Curiosity and Perseverance on Mars.
What is the 'solar system'?
The solar system consists of the Sun and all the objects that orbit it, including eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids and comets. The solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust.
What is 'microgravity'?
Microgravity describes conditions in which the effect of gravity appears to be very weak, as experienced by astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Gravity still acts, but because the station is in free fall around the Earth, everything inside falls together and appears weightless.
What is the 'event horizon' of a black hole?
The event horizon is the boundary around a black hole beyond which nothing — not even light — can escape the gravitational pull. It is sometimes called the 'point of no return'. It is not a physical surface but the mathematical boundary of the region from which escape is impossible.
What is the difference between a 'meteor', a 'meteoroid' and a 'meteorite'?
A meteoroid is a small rocky body in space. When it enters Earth's atmosphere and burns up, the streak of light produced is a meteor (or 'shooting star'). If part of it survives and lands on Earth, that remnant is a meteorite. An asteroid is a larger rocky body orbiting the Sun.
