Frequently Asked Questions
Our test is designed to give a reliable CEFR estimate based on grammar and vocabulary knowledge across all six levels. While no free online test replaces an official CEFR examination, this test provides a strong indication of your current level and is suitable for self-assessment and study planning.
The test contains 30 questions — 5 questions at each of the six CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. This ensures your level is assessed accurately across the full proficiency spectrum.
Most learners complete the test in approximately 5 minutes. There is no time limit, so you can take as long as you need. The questions start easy and become progressively more challenging.
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) defines six levels: A1 (Beginner), A2 (Elementary), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Upper-Intermediate), C1 (Advanced) and C2 (Proficient/Mastery). Each level describes specific language competencies in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
CEFR B2 corresponds roughly to IELTS 5.5–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72–94. C1 aligns with IELTS 7.0–8.0 or TOEFL iBT 95–120. C2 corresponds to IELTS 8.5+ or near-native proficiency on TOEFL. These are approximations as each test measures slightly different skills.
Yes, you can retake the test as many times as you like. We recommend waiting at least a few weeks between attempts so your results reflect genuine progress rather than familiarity with the questions.
No sign-up is required. The test runs entirely in your browser. Your most recent result is saved locally on your device so you can refer back to it, but no personal data is sent to any server.
Your results are stored only in your browser's localStorage on your own device. We do not collect, store or share your test results. You can clear them at any time by clearing your browser data.
Your level is determined by your performance at each CEFR band. To achieve a level, you must answer at least 4 out of 5 questions correctly at that level. Your final level is the highest band where you score 4 or 5 correct answers.
After the test, you'll receive personalised recommendations based on your level. Explore the LexFizz exercises that match your CEFR level, read our blog for grammar and vocabulary tips, and consider retaking the test in a few weeks to track your progress.
