Press "Generate Word" to get started.

Why use a random word generator for ESL learning?

Encountering vocabulary out of context is one of the most effective ways to force active recall. When you see a word without its surrounding sentence, your brain must work harder to retrieve its meaning — strengthening long-term retention. Use this tool at the start of a study session as a warm-up, or challenge yourself to write a sentence using each generated word.

The CEFR filter lets you stay within your comfort zone or deliberately push into the next level. Research into vocabulary acquisition consistently shows that learners who encounter slightly challenging words (known as i+1 input) make faster progress than those who only review familiar vocabulary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the random word generator work?
The tool picks a random word from a built-in vocabulary list of 96 carefully selected English words. Each word includes its part of speech, CEFR difficulty level, and a clear definition. You can filter by CEFR level to focus on words that match your current learning stage.
What is CEFR and why does it matter?
CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It divides language ability into six levels: A1 (beginner) through C2 (mastery). Knowing a word's CEFR level helps you focus on vocabulary that is appropriate for your current proficiency and avoid wasting time on words that are too easy or too advanced.
Can I use this tool to study for IELTS or Cambridge exams?
Yes. The word list focuses on academic and general vocabulary that frequently appears in IELTS, Cambridge FCE, CAE, and CPE examinations. Filtering for B2 and C1 words is especially useful when preparing for upper-intermediate and advanced examinations.
How many words are in the generator?
The generator contains 96 words spanning CEFR levels A2 through C1. The list is curated to include high-frequency academic vocabulary rather than rare or obscure terms, making every generated word genuinely useful to practise.
Is this random word generator free?
Yes, the Random Word Generator is completely free to use with no registration, no subscription, and no adverts. It works entirely in your browser.
How can I practise a word after generating it?
After the word appears, click the "Practice this word" link to open a Word Search exercise where you can hunt for the word in a puzzle. You can also try Flash Cards to test yourself on vocabulary recall.
What parts of speech does the generator include?
The generator includes nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. The part of speech is shown as a coloured badge next to each generated word so you can immediately understand how the word functions in a sentence.
Can teachers use this tool in class?
Absolutely. Teachers can use the Random Word Generator to introduce a new vocabulary item at the start of a lesson, run a quick definition challenge, or create a vocabulary warm-up activity. The CEFR filter makes it easy to select words appropriate for the class level.
Does the generator repeat words?
The generator uses a random selection algorithm, so it is possible to see the same word more than once in a session. The counter at the bottom shows how many words you have generated in the current session.
Will more words be added in the future?
Yes, we plan to expand the word list to cover all CEFR levels including A1 and C2, and to add example sentences for each word. Check back regularly for updates.
