Key airport vocabulary: check-in, boarding pass, gate, departure lounge, arrivals/departures board, security check, customs, passport control, baggage claim, hand luggage/carry-on, hold luggage/checked baggage, terminal, runway, delayed, cancelled, boarding, transit, and layover. Phrases: 'Which gate is my flight at?', 'My bag is missing.'

Essential hotel vocabulary: reception/front desk, check-in, check-out, reservation/booking, single/double/twin room, suite, concierge, room service, housekeeping, amenities, key card, minibar, en-suite (private bathroom), full board (all meals), half board (breakfast and dinner), bed and breakfast. Phrases: 'I have a reservation.', 'What time is check-out?'

'Travel' is the general uncountable noun. 'Trip' is a short journey to a place and back (a business trip). 'Journey' focuses on the process of travelling from one place to another. 'Voyage' refers to a long journey by sea or in space. 'Excursion' is a short organised trip.

Useful direction phrases: 'Excuse me, how do I get to...?', 'Where is the nearest...?', 'Is it far?', 'Take the first/second turning on the left/right.', 'Go straight on.', 'Turn left/right at the traffic lights.', 'It's on the corner of...', 'It's about ten minutes' walk from here.'

Online booking vocabulary: search, availability, one-way/return ticket, outbound/inbound, flexible dates, fare class (economy, business, first), seat selection, cancellation policy, refundable/non-refundable, booking reference/confirmation number, add-ons, travel insurance. 'Book' and 'reserve' are often synonymous in travel contexts.

Common problems: delayed/cancelled flight, lost luggage, overbooking, missed connection, no vacancies (hotel full), travel sickness, jet lag, pickpocketing. Useful phrases: 'My flight has been cancelled.', 'My bag hasn't arrived.', 'I've missed my connection.', 'I'd like to make a complaint.'

A passport is an official document confirming your identity and citizenship for international travel. A visa is an official permission granted by a foreign country allowing you to enter, stay, or work there. A travel document is any official document used for international travel.

Passport control vocabulary: border control, immigration, customs declaration, nothing to declare/goods to declare, duty-free allowance, prohibited items, transit passenger, return ticket, proof of accommodation, purpose of visit, length of stay, entry stamp. Common questions: 'What is the purpose of your visit?', 'How long do you intend to stay?'

Accommodation types: hotel (full-service), hostel (budget, shared rooms), bed and breakfast/B&B, motel (roadside hotel), guesthouse, self-catering apartment/holiday let, villa, campsite/campground, holiday park, resort, youth hostel, homestay, and Airbnb/serviced apartment. 'No vacancy' means all rooms are taken.

Travel idioms: 'off the beaten track' (away from tourist areas), 'hit the road' (start travelling), 'it's a small world' (surprising coincidence meeting someone abroad), 'live out of a suitcase' (travel constantly), 'travel light' (pack very little), and 'plain sailing' (going smoothly).
