What is saponification?

Saponification is the chemical reaction that happens when lye meets oil or fat, converting them into soap and glycerine. It is the core process behind almost all traditional soap making. During saponification the mixture changes from a runny liquid to a thick batter and eventually into a solid bar over the following weeks.

Why is lye needed to make soap?

Lye is the alkaline ingredient that reacts with oils to trigger saponification; without it, oils and water alone would never become soap. Because lye is caustic in its raw form, soap makers measure it precisely and wear protective gloves and goggles. Once saponification is complete, no active lye should remain in a properly made bar.

What is the difference between cold process and hot process soap?

Cold process soap is mixed at a low temperature and then left to saponify slowly over several weeks without extra heat. Hot process soap is gently cooked during mixing, which speeds up saponification so the soap can often be used much sooner. Cold process typically produces smoother, more detailed designs, while hot process is faster and more rustic looking.

What does trace mean in soap making?

Trace is the stage when a soap mixture has thickened enough that a spoonful drizzled on the surface leaves a visible trail before sinking back in. Reaching trace shows the oils and lye solution have combined properly and the batter is ready to be poured into a mould, often with added colour or fragrance.

Why does soap need to cure?

To cure soap means to let the bars sit, usually for around four weeks, so extra water evaporates and the bar becomes harder and milder. Curing also allows saponification to finish completely. Skipping this step results in a softer bar that dissolves quickly and may still feel harsh on the skin.

What is superfat and why is it used?

Superfat is a small percentage of oil deliberately left unreacted in a soap recipe, meaning there is slightly more oil than the lye can convert. This leftover oil makes the finished bar gentler and more moisturising on the skin. Most handmade soap recipes use a superfat of around five to eight percent.

What is the difference between fragrance oil and essential oil?

A fragrance oil is a manufactured scent, often designed to smell like a particular flower, fruit, or food, offering countless creative options. An essential oil is a natural extract taken directly from a plant, such as lavender or eucalyptus, and is prized for being fully natural, though the scent range is more limited.
