What is an ice axe used for, and what is self-arrest?
An ice axe is the mountaineer's most important tool on snow and ice. The shaft and spike act like a walking stick for balance, the pick can be swung into ice for grip on steep ground, and the adze can chop steps or clear snow. Its most vital function is self-arrest: if a climber slips and begins to slide down a snow slope, they roll onto the axe and drive the pick into the snow to stop themselves before they gather dangerous speed. Practising self-arrest is a fundamental skill.
What is the difference between a crevasse and a bergschrund?
Both are cracks in glacial ice, but they form differently. A crevasse is any deep fissure that opens up as a glacier flows over uneven ground and the ice stretches; crevasses can appear anywhere on the glacier and are often hidden beneath snow bridges. A bergschrund is a specific, usually large crevasse at the very head of the glacier, where the moving ice separates from the static ice or rock of the mountain above. The bergschrund is frequently the first major obstacle when starting a steep snow or ice climb.
What is acclimatisation and why does it matter?
Acclimatisation is the process by which the body gradually adapts to the lower oxygen levels found at high altitude. As climbers go higher, the air pressure drops and each breath delivers less oxygen, which can cause altitude sickness — headaches, nausea, and in severe cases life-threatening fluid build-up in the lungs or brain. To acclimatise, mountaineers ascend slowly, take rest days, and often 'climb high, sleep low'. Proper acclimatisation is essential for safety on any major peak and cannot be rushed.
How do abseiling and a bivouac help on a climb?
Abseiling (rappelling) is a controlled descent down a rope using a friction device; it is how climbers safely get down steep faces where down-climbing would be too risky, and it is also a key part of rescue and retreat. A bivouac is an improvised overnight camp without a full tent, used when a climb is too long to finish in a day. Climbers shelter in a bivouac sack or on a small ledge to rest before continuing. What are a couloir, a col, and a cornice?

A cornice is an overhanging lip of wind-blown snow that builds out beyond the edge of a ridge; because cornices can break off under weight, climbers stay well back from the apparent edge of a corniced ridge.
What are moraines and seracs?
Both are features associated with glaciers. A moraine is the ridge of rock, gravel, and debris that a glacier scrapes up and deposits along its sides (lateral moraine) and at its end (terminal moraine); moraines often provide an approach route to a peak, though the loose rock can be tiring to cross. A serac is a towering block or pinnacle of glacial ice formed where crevasses cross. Seracs are notoriously unstable and can topple without warning, so climbers try to move quickly through serac-threatened zones.
Why are crevasses so dangerous on a glacier?
Crevasses are dangerous mainly because they are often invisible. Fresh snow can form fragile bridges across the top of a crevasse, hiding a drop that may be tens of metres deep. A climber stepping onto a weak snow bridge can break through and fall in. For this reason, mountaineers crossing a glacier usually rope together so that, if one person falls into a crevasse, the others can arrest the fall and perform a crevasse rescue to haul them out.
How do climbers stay safe around cornices and seracs?
Cornices and seracs are both objective hazards — dangers from the environment rather than from the climber's own actions. With cornices, the key is to recognise which side of a ridge is overhanging and to walk well back from the true rock edge, never out onto the snow lip. With seracs, climbers study the route to identify which sections lie beneath unstable ice, then cross those zones as quickly as possible, ideally early in the day when colder temperatures make collapse slightly less likely. Good route choice and timing are the main defences.
