What is a blowpipe and how is it used?

A blowpipe is the long, hollow steel tube that is central to glassblowing. The artist dips one end into the furnace to collect molten glass (the gather), then blows down the tube to inflate a bubble inside the glass. Because the pipe is hollow, the breath travels through it and expands the soft glass like a balloon. The artist constantly rotates the pipe to keep the glass centred and symmetrical, reheating it as needed so it stays workable.

What is the difference between a gather and a parison?

A gather is the lump of molten glass collected on the end of the blowpipe straight from the furnace, before any air is blown in. A parison is the next stage: once the artist blows the first puff of air into the gather, a small bubble forms, and this initial inflated shape is the parison. In short, the gather is the raw glass and the parison is the first bubble made from it, which is then developed into the final form.

What is a punty and why is it needed?

A punty (also spelled pontil) is a solid metal rod attached to the base of a glass piece. It is needed because, to finish the opening or rim of a vessel, the artist must remove the piece from the blowpipe — which is attached at the other end. By fixing a punty to the bottom, the artist can hold, turn, and reheat the piece while opening and shaping the top. When the work is done, the piece is knocked off the punty, sometimes leaving a small 'pontil mark'.

Why is annealing essential for finished glass?

Annealing is the slow, controlled cooling of glass in a special oven (an annealer or lehr). When hot glass cools, its outside hardens faster than its inside, which locks in internal stresses. If the glass cooled too quickly in the open air, those stresses would cause it to crack or even shatter, sometimes hours or days later. Annealing holds the glass at a set temperature and then lowers it gradually over hours so the stresses are released evenly, leaving a stable, durable piece.

What are the marver, jacks, and glory hole used for?

These are core studio tools. The marver is a flat metal table on which the artist rolls the hot glass to shape it, centre it on the pipe, and pick up colour. The jacks are a large spring tweezer used to form necks, lips, and the line where the piece will later break off the punty. The glory hole is a small reheating furnace that keeps the glass hot and workable; the artist returns to it again and again, because glass quickly becomes too stiff to shape as it cools.

What are cullet and frit, and how do they differ?

Both are forms of glass added to the work, but they serve different purposes. Cullet is broken or recycled glass melted in the furnace to make a fresh batch of clear glass; it lowers the melting temperature and reduces waste. Frit is crushed coloured glass in granules of various coarsenesses, used decoratively: the artist rolls hot glass over frit to pick up colour and texture, then fuses it into the surface. In short, cullet is mostly raw material for melting, while frit is a colourant and surface decoration.

What is murrine and how is it made?

Murrine are coloured patterns revealed in cross-section. The maker layers different colours of molten glass to build up a design, then stretches the mass into a long, thin cane while keeping the pattern intact. When the cane is sliced crosswise, each slice shows the design — often a flower, star, or face. These slices are then arranged and fused onto or into a glass piece. The famous millefiori ('thousand flowers') technique is made this way, and murrine require considerable planning and skill.

What is borosilicate glass and why is it special?

Borosilicate is a glass formulated with boron trioxide, which gives it a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. This means it can withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking — a property called thermal-shock resistance. It is used for laboratory glassware, ovenware, and flameworking (also called lampworking), where artists shape glass rods and tubes in the flame of a torch rather than gathering from a furnace. Its durability and clarity make it popular for both scientific and artistic work.

What is the glory hole and how often is it used?

The glory hole is a small, intensely hot reheating furnace, separate from the main melting furnace. Because glass loses heat quickly and becomes too stiff to shape within seconds of leaving the heat, the artist must reheat the piece constantly. They insert the work into the glory hole, rotate it to warm it evenly, then withdraw it to shape it before it cools again. A single piece may be returned to the glory hole dozens of times during its making.
