What is a peloton in cycling?

The peloton is the main group of riders in a road race. The word comes from French and means “small ball” or “platoon” — a reference to the compact, rolling shape the group forms. Riders stay close together in the peloton because the aerodynamic benefit of drafting means they use significantly less energy than a lone rider travelling at the same speed. Riders near the back save the most energy, while those at the very front are exposed to the full force of the wind. Tactical positioning within the peloton is one of the key skills in road racing.

What is drafting and how much energy does it save?

Drafting, also called slipstreaming, is the technique of riding in the low-pressure zone directly behind another rider, where the lead rider has already displaced the air. Studies show that drafting can reduce a cyclist's aerodynamic drag by 20–40% depending on their position in a group, with riders in the middle of a large peloton saving the most. This energy saving allows riders to travel at the same speed as the rider in front while using considerably less effort, preserving energy for key moments such as climbs and final sprints. Drafting is prohibited in individual time trials.

What is the role of a domestique in a cycling team?

A domestique is a team member whose job is to serve the team's designated race leader rather than to pursue personal results. Domestique duties include riding at the front of the peloton to set pace and protect the leader from wind, chasing down dangerous breakaways, collecting food bags and water bottles from the team car and carrying them to the leader, waiting for the leader if they suffer a puncture, and even giving the leader their own bicycle if necessary. Being a good domestique requires selflessness, tactical intelligence, and considerable physical strength.

What does the derailleur do on a bicycle?

The derailleur is the mechanical device on a bicycle that moves the chain from one gear sprocket to another when the rider shifts gears, allowing them to change the resistance and speed of pedalling. Most road bikes have both a rear derailleur, which moves the chain across the cassette, and a front derailleur, which moves it between chainrings. A well-adjusted derailleur shifts smoothly and quietly; a bent or misaligned one can cause the chain to skip or fail to reach the smallest or largest gears.

What is a breakaway and why do riders attempt one?

A breakaway happens when one or more riders separate from the main peloton and ride ahead, attempting to reach the finish line before the main group catches them. Riders attempt breakaways to gain time in the general classification, to win a stage outright, to collect intermediate sprint or mountain points, or simply to gain television exposure for their sponsors. Breakaways succeed most often when the peloton is not motivated to chase, for example on a flat stage far from the finish, but they are usually caught before the line on stages that suit the fast sprinters.

What is 'bonking' in cycling and how can it be avoided?

Bonking (or “hitting the wall” in running) is the sudden, severe energy crash that occurs when a cyclist's muscles and brain run out of glycogen — the form in which the body stores carbohydrates for use during exercise. When glycogen stores are depleted, performance drops dramatically; the rider feels weak, dizzy, and unable to maintain any power. It can be avoided by eating carbohydrates regularly during exercise — typically 60–90 grams per hour during long efforts — using energy gels, bars, or real food, and by starting rides with adequate glycogen stores built up through good nutrition in the days before.

What is the general classification in a stage race?

The general classification (GC) is the overall standings in a multi-day stage race, based on the total accumulated time each rider has taken to complete all stages. The rider with the lowest total time leads the GC and wears a distinctive leader's jersey — the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia, and the red jersey at the Vuelta a España. Teams build their entire race strategy around protecting or advancing their GC rider, making the GC contest the central narrative of all major tours.

What is cadence in cycling and what is a good cadence?

Cadence is the number of times a cyclist completes a full pedalling revolution per minute (rpm). Riding at a high cadence in an easier gear places less stress on muscles and joints but demands more from the cardiovascular system; a lower cadence in a big gear stresses muscles more. Most professional road cyclists and coaches recommend a cadence of around 80–100 rpm for sustained efforts, as this tends to be most efficient and reduces the risk of knee injury. During a sprint, cadence may briefly exceed 120 rpm; on a very steep climb, it may drop to 50–60 rpm.

What is the difference between a criterium and a road race?

A criterium (or crit) is a short-circuit race in which riders complete multiple laps of a closed, usually urban course — typically 0.5–2 kilometres per lap — over a fixed time or number of laps. They are popular because spectators can watch the action repeatedly as riders pass. A road race, by contrast, follows a point-to-point or looped open route over a much longer distance — typically 100–250 kilometres — through open countryside and towns, with one pass of the finish line. Road races allow for more tactical variety including breakaways, while criteriums tend to favour fast, technical riders who can handle tight corners at high speed.

What is an echelon and when does it form in road racing?

An echelon is a diagonal formation that riders adopt when facing a strong crosswind. Because the wind is coming from the side rather than the front, the most sheltered position is not directly behind the rider in front but slightly to their windward side. This causes riders to fan diagonally across the road. Echelons are important tactically because only a limited number of riders fit across the road width in a sheltered position; riders who cannot squeeze into an echelon must ride exposed to the wind and quickly fall behind. In windy stage races, echelons regularly split the peloton into groups separated by several minutes.
