What is 'filament' in 3D printing?

Filament is a long, thin string of plastic that is melted and used as the raw material in most desktop 3D printers. It is usually sold on spools and comes in materials such as PLA and ABS. The printer heats the filament and pushes it through a nozzle to build an object layer by layer.

What does 'slicing' mean?

Slicing is the process of converting a 3D digital model into thin horizontal layers and the step-by-step instructions a printer needs to follow. Slicing software lets the user set variables such as layer height, print speed and temperature before sending the file to the printer.

What is 'infill' and why does it matter?

Infill is the internal pattern that partly fills a printed object rather than making it completely solid. A higher infill percentage makes an object stronger and heavier but uses more filament and takes longer to print, so it is usually adjusted depending on how much strength the final part needs.

What is the difference between 'PLA' and 'resin'?

PLA is a common plastic filament made from renewable plant sources, used in standard fused-deposition printers and popular with beginners because it prints easily at low temperatures. Resin is a liquid material that hardens under light, used in high-detail printers that produce much finer surface quality, often for small figures or dental models.

What is a 'support' structure in 3D printing?

A support is a temporary structure printed underneath overhanging parts of a model so that the material has something to rest on while it cools and hardens. Supports are removed after printing, sometimes leaving small marks that need light sanding or other post-processing.

What does 'warping' mean?

Warping is a common printing defect in which the corners or edges of a print lift and curl away from the print bed as the material cools unevenly. It is more likely with large, flat objects and can often be reduced by using a heated bed or an enclosure.

What is 'additive manufacturing'?

Additive manufacturing is the formal industrial term for any process, including 3D printing, that builds objects by adding material layer by layer rather than cutting material away, as in traditional machining. It is widely used in aerospace and medical device production.

What is the purpose of a 'nozzle' and 'extruder'?

The extruder is the mechanism that feeds, melts and pushes filament through the printer, while the nozzle is the small heated opening at the end through which the melted material is deposited onto the print. A blocked nozzle is one of the most common causes of a failed print.

Why is the 'first layer' so important?

The first layer is the initial layer of a print and it strongly affects the success of everything printed afterwards. If the first layer does not stick firmly and evenly to the print bed, later layers may shift, warp or detach entirely, ruining the print.

What is 'post-processing'?

Post-processing refers to any finishing work carried out after a print is complete, such as removing supports, sanding rough surfaces, or painting the final object. It can transform a rough, functional print into a smooth, professional-looking finished product.
